Lift grew out of a concern for that element of the local community who are homeless or in the sort of accommodation which gives them nowhere to socialise in the day time. One of our members, a lady called Libby, articulated the need and a way of responding to that need. Discussions were then developed under the heading of ‘Libby’s Friday Thing’ until one member of the team shortened this unwieldy name to ‘Lift’. We ran a training course for the last three months of 2016 and opened at the start of 2017. We have more than twenty team members, they are drawn from four different churches and some have no church affiliation.

We open from 13.00 to 15.00 every Friday afternoon to offer food and a listening ear to any who come along. Throughout 2018 numbers have ranged from 25 to 45 with 30+ being the norm. As appropriate we help those who attend with a range of paperwork and accompany our guests to formal meetings when they request the presence of a supportive friend. A number of professionals attend our sessions from time to time in order to meet their clients.

Possibilities under discussion include cooking classes, bicycle maintenance classes, foot care sessions.

We do not work in isolation. St Swithins, Grace Church and the Salvation Army all run comparable projects and we work hard at coordinating our collective efforts. Other churches are in discussion now about joining in this work to provide more safe spaces around Lincoln.
